House Above Lake Austin

Photography by Art Gray and Matthew Millman

I was an intern in the office, working under Tim Dacey, and I didn’t get it. We drew elevations, and they looked pretty boring. The wall system of concrete block seemed extreme, but was necessary to achieve a rigid enough wall for a stucco finish with no joints. It had a roof of welded seam metal, the interior was relentless plaster. There was a lot of solid wall.

And then it was finished, and it was so good, and I learned a thousand lessons about design; about what it is, how it can nurture, and what it doesn’t have to be.
